Mayor Brown selected the Buffalo Sabres to develop the new Webster Block, a $172 million hockey themed complex – the first of it’s kind.  The project will create 600 new jobs and Buffalo residents will benefit from two ice rinks, a hotel, restaurant, retail and parking.

There is $1.7 billion in economic development happening right now in Buffalo.

Construction is well underway on the new Webster Block – a one-of-a-kind hockey themed complex with two ice rinks, a hotel, restaurant, retail and parking for Buffalo residents to enjoy.  And the project will create 600 jobs.

And there’s much more.  Catholic Health is in the process of bringing 700 workers to downtown Buffalo. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will soon be home to the UB Medical School and John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. And we’re finally developing the Waterfront.

In addition, Mayor Brown has collaborated with Governor Cuomo to spend $1 billion in state funds to transform and renew our local economy.  Under Mayor Brown’s leadership, the Buffalo Business Community is more confident – and that helps create jobs.

Mayor Brown’s continued sound financial management has caught Wall Street’s attention.  At a time when other cities and states have seen their credit ratings downgraded, Buffalo has  earned “A” ratings from all the major credit rating agencies – the highest rating in Buffalo’s history.

Mayor Brown has been working to get Buffalo’s financial house in order – creating a stable fiscal environment that encourages investment, development, and opportunity for all. 

Mayor Brown started the Summer Youth Employment Program to give basic workplace skills training and meaningful job experiences to Buffalo’s youth.  

Since 2006, the program has provided at least 17,256 meaningful employment opportunities.

Opportunity is turning into progress under Mayor Brown’s leadership along Buffalo’s Waterfront.

The Hatch Restaurant at the Erie Basin Marina is already a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The marina is now home to a new beach, boardwalk, picnic areas, and a new ice cream gazebo. Eventually, the area near the marina will include new hotels, residential apartments and a roof top restaurant.

Ground has also been broken on the Broderick Park Revitalization Project that will have new shelters and grills, an amphitheater, and other family friendly amenities.

The Bird Island Pier, a popular fishing destination, will soon be re-opened for the public to enjoy after repairs are completed.

Mayor Brown cut residential property tax rates by 15% - and kept his pledge to freeze them for three years to create tax certainty.

In addition, the commercial property tax rate in Buffalo has been cut by nearly 28% since 2006. Buffalo now has one of the lowest effective tax rates among Upstate New York’s largest cities.

Mayor Brown believes every Buffalo student deserves access to a college education.  That’s why he’s proud to support and invest in the “Say Yes To Buffalo” program.

“Say Yes To Buffalo” is a basic promise to Buffalo’s public school students: If you graduate from high school and want to go to college, you will have your college education paid for – period.  And the program provides students with educational support along the way. 

7,500 children have completed the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program – an initiative he started to improve literacy rates in Western New York, particularly in Buffalo.  The reading program gives K-8 students more confidence and provides them with new skills. 

Mayor Brown knows that providing a quality education is the most important thing we can do for our children. A strong public education system is essential to the success of our city and will attract new residents to move here.

Mayor Brown is leading a billion-dollar effort to renovate public schools – upgrading schools with antiquated technologies and improving others  that haven’t been renovated in decades. 

Sometimes making progress just means using a little common sense. Mayor Brown secured $31 million for the Cars on Main Street project to open Main Street to traffic  –  connecting customers with downtown businesses, attracting new businesses and creating jobs.

From the Rainforest exhibit to the new polar bear exhibit coming to the Buffalo Zoo, Mayor Brown is introducing new cultural attractions to enrich the lives of Buffalo residents and increase tourism. 

Mayor Brown knows that better parks mean a better quality of life. That’s why he has invested $30 million in parks since he became Mayor.

Mayor Brown has led the effort to upgrade, repair, and construct parks across Buffalo. And the one-of-a-kind high-tech Splash Pad at Martin Luther King Jr. Park has just opened.

This Year, Massachusetts Avenue Park will be completed, Coca-Cola Field will be upgraded, and reconstruction of historic Broderick Park will begin.

There are 70,000 new recycling bins in Buffalo that are picked up every week. This is good for the environment and sound economics.

Last year,  Buffalo recycled 13,000 tons – the most in Buffalo’s history. This saved Buffalo more than $200,000 in litter cleanup and waste disposal costs.

Mayor Brown also expanded the single stream recycling program to Buffalo schools, with over a dozen schools now participating.
